Short answer
Google reviews are associated with a Google profile name, but the public name may not reveal the reviewer's legal identity. An unfamiliar or non-identifying profile name does not by itself make a review fake or removable.
The safest way to evaluate a questionable review is to start with Google's current Maps policy, identify the exact rule at issue, and document the facts that support that concern.
Important: A negative review is not removable simply because a business believes it is unfair. Google removes content when it violates applicable policy, and Google makes the final decision.
Public identity is not the policy test
Google focuses on whether the contribution is genuine and compliant. A pseudonym or limited public profile information does not automatically prove fake engagement.
What businesses should evaluate instead
Look at the review details, transaction context, timing, location, claimed service, reviewer history, duplicate wording, and any conflict relationship you can actually support.
When profile behavior matters
A profile posting repetitive, coordinated, abusive, or misleading content can itself be reported if the user is violating Google's content policies.
Avoid doxxing attempts
Do not publicly investigate or expose personal information about a reviewer. Google's policies themselves restrict posting personal information without consent.
Frequently asked questions
Can I remove a review because I do not know the person's real name?
No. Lack of a recognizable legal name is not itself a policy violation.
Can I report the reviewer's profile?
Google allows reporting user profiles that contribute policy-violating content or engage in abusive behavior.
Should I publicly ask who they are?
A neutral request to contact the business is safer than trying to identify or expose the person publicly.
